BSL is a sign language using English but its nature means that poems written by someone like me lose such things a assonance, rhyme and anything that needs sound to be expressed so “translating” a poem by a hearing person such as me into BSL is difficult and I cannot imagine how it seems. Here Tina Kemp head of signing in Brimsdown Primary school gives her interpretation. Her primary school is a centre of excellence for BSL and has about 750 pupils all of whom are taught BSL. Interestingly, they have found that parents who are learning English learn quicker if they are also taught BSL.
